Located in South Australia's rolling hills, McLaren Vale is a haven for wine lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. This region is much more than just a collection of world-class wineries. From scenic drives along vineyard-lined roads to farm-to-table dining experiences, McLaren Vale offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Whether you’re here to sip on a glass of Shiraz or explore the breathtaking landscapes, this charming wine country promises something for everyone.

McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley are two of South Australia's most renowned wine regions, each offering unique experiences for wine enthusiasts. McLaren Vale, located closer to Adelaide, is known for its picturesque coastal landscapes, diverse range of wineries, and a strong emphasis on sustainable practices and innovative wine styles, especially its celebrated Shiraz and Grenache. The region's proximity to the coast also influences its wine production, adding a distinctive character to its wines.

We drove to McLaren Vale from Melbourne, a nine hour drive, but the easier option would be to fly into Adelaide. It's then approximately a 45 minute drive to McLaren Vale.

We stayed at the wonderful Oxenberry Farm, which I can highly recommend. We stayed in the Daringa House and there was plenty of room for a family of four. It's also right on the Shiraz Trail, which is a walking track between several beautiful wineries.

The cottage even had an open fire.

Our first stop was Hugh Hamilton Wines, where we had an amazing chocolate and wine tasting (two of my favourite things!).

I love how the wineries in McLaren Vale are so family friendly. Our daughter was given colouring pencils and drawing paper, whilst our son was happily snoozing in his pram.

The following day, we visited Down the Rabbit Hole for lunch.

The highlight of the trip for my daughter was being able to feed kangaroos at Woodstock Wines. It was a great experience for her to be able to get so close to the kangaroos.

If you're into good wine and beautiful scenery, McLaren Vale is definitely worth a visit. With its rolling hills, coastal views, and focus on sustainable winemaking, the vibe here is laid-back and welcoming. You’ll find a great mix of wineries to explore, plus plenty of fresh local food to enjoy. It’s the perfect spot to kick back, taste some amazing wines, and soak up the relaxed atmosphere of South Australia’s wine country.
