The French Riviera, or Côte d'Azur, is one of my all-time favourite destinations. Its blend of glamour, natural beauty, and Mediterranean charm keeps me coming back time and again. Over the years, I’ve explored its stunning coastline with friends, as part of a family adventure with my young kids, and on romantic getaways with my partner. Each trip reveals something new, proving why the Riviera remains such a captivating and versatile destination.

In this guide, I’ll share my experiences in five iconic destinations: Nice, Antibes, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Cannes, and St Tropez. Whether you’re planning a solo trip, a family holiday, or a romantic escape, I've got you covered.

Nice: The Vibrant Heart of the Riviera

Nice is the beating heart of the French Riviera, with its iconic Promenade des Anglais, vibrant old town, and endless cultural offerings.

  • Highlights: Start your day with a stroll along the Promenade, taking in views of the azure sea. Explore the Old Town (Vieux Nice) with its narrow streets, colourful buildings, and bustling markets. Don’t miss the Marché aux Fleurs Cours Saleya, where fresh produce and flowers create a sensory feast.Art lovers will enjoy the Matisse Museum, while history buffs can climb Castle Hill for panoramic views and a glimpse of Nice’s ancient ruins.

  • Family-Friendly Activities: Nice is very child-friendly. Visit Parc de la Colline du Château for space to run and play, or cool off with the fountains at Promenade du Paillon.

  • Where to Eat: For local flavours, try Socca (a chickpea pancake) at Chez Pipo. Fine diners can head to Le Chantecler, a Michelin-starred restaurant in the iconic Hotel Negresco. For a fun place near Rue Bonaparte (my favourite area to stay in Nice), try Babbo Mio.

  • Where to Stay: We love staying at Airbnbs when in Nice - just be aware that older apartments in Nice normally don't have elevators or air conditioning (but oodles of charm!)

Villefranche-sur-Mer: A Hidden Gem

Villefranche-sur-Mer is a picturesque village with a colourful waterfront, relaxed atmosphere, and stunning bay. I prefer the beach here to the one in Nice, especially with young kids, as it's sandy and relatively shallow.

  • Highlights: Wander along the Rue Obscure, a covered medieval street that feels like a step back in time. The sandy Plage des Marinières is a great spot for a swim or sunbathe.

  • Perfect for Couples or Families: The romantic ambience of Villefranche-sur-Mer makes it ideal for couples. Enjoy a leisurely dinner overlooking the harbour or take a sunset boat ride around the bay.

  • Where to Eat: La Mère Germaine is a classic choice for fresh seafood with views of the harbour.

Antibes: History Meets Luxury

Antibes combines medieval charm with a luxurious yachting scene. It’s the perfect blend of old and new.

  • Highlights:The 16th-century Fort Carré offers a glimpse into Antibes' military past, while the Picasso Museum houses works created during his time in the town. The Port Vauban marina is home to some of the world’s most impressive yachts, making it a haven for boat enthusiasts.

  • Family-Friendly Activities:The sandy beaches of Juan-les-Pins are perfect for families, with shallow waters ideal for young children. Marineland, a marine-themed amusement park, is also a hit with kids.

  • Where to Eat:For a casual meal, try Le Café des Chineurs in the old town. For something upscale, Restaurant Le Figuier de Saint-Esprit offers a gastronomic experience in a charming courtyard setting.

Cannes: Glamour and Beaches

Cannes is synonymous with the glitz of the film festival, but there’s more to this town than red carpets and celebrities.

  • Highlights: Walk the Boulevard de la Croisette, lined with luxury boutiques and beachfront cafes. Take a ferry to the nearby ÃŽles de Lérins, where you can explore the historic Abbey of Saint-Honorat or enjoy a secluded picnic.

  • Family-Friendly Activities: The sandy beaches along the Croisette are well-maintained and great for kids. Many have shallow waters and play areas.

  • Where to Eat: L’Affable offers exquisite French cuisine in a cosy atmosphere, while family-friendly options include beachside restaurants like Vegaluna.

  • Best beach clubs: La Môme, hands down

St Tropez: The Quintessential Riviera Escape

St Tropez is the epitome of Riviera chic, offering a mix of high-end glamour and Provençal charm.

  • Highlights: Spend your mornings exploring the quaint old town and its famous market at Place des Lices. Head to the Pampelonne Beach for the quintessential St Tropez experience—whether that’s lounging at a trendy beach club or enjoying a quiet swim.

  • Perfect for Friends or Couples: The nightlife in St Tropez is legendary, with hotspots like Les Caves du Roy attracting partygoers from around the globe. For a more relaxed evening, enjoy a glass of rosé at one of the harbourside wine bars.

  • Where to Eat:Try Sénéquier, a Riviera institution known for its tarte tropézienne, or Club 55, the ultimate beachside dining experience.

Tips for Exploring the Riviera

  • Transport: The Riviera is well-connected by train, making it easy to hop between towns. Renting a car offers flexibility, especially for visiting hilltop villages and hidden beaches.

  • Best Time to Visit: Late spring and early autumn provide the perfect balance of warm weather and fewer crowds.

  • Accommodation: Options range from luxury hotels like Hôtel Negresco in Nice to charming boutique stays and budget-friendly apartments.

Whether you’re seeking cultural adventures, seaside relaxation, or a taste of luxury, the French Riviera delivers it all. This guide barely scratches the surface of what the Côte d'Azur has to offer, but I hope it inspires your next adventure.
