Perched on a series of islands connected by bridges and ferries, Stockholm is a city that effortlessly blends tradition with modernity. Its understated elegance is matched by a sense of calm that flows through its streets and waterways. Here, the medieval architecture of Gamla Stan contrasts with the sleek design of contemporary districts, creating a cityscape that's as diverse as it is cohesive.
Östermalm Saluhall is a must visit. Housed in a historic building with stunning wooden interiors, this market is a feast for both the eyes and the palate. Here, you’ll find an array of stalls offering everything from fresh seafood and artisanal cheeses to traditional Swedish delicacies like gravlax and smörgåstårta.
NK, or Nordiska Kompaniet, is Stockholm’s most iconic department store, standing as a symbol of Scandinavian luxury and style since its opening in 1915. The store spans multiple floors, offering everything from high-end fashion and designer home goods to gourmet food and beauty products.
As the city is sprawled across 14 islands connected by over 50 bridges, you're literally surrounded by water everywhere you go.
There are some great bars and restaurants along the water where you can stop for a drink or a bite to eat.
No trip to Stockholm is complete without exploring the stunning Stockholm Archipelago, a must-see destination just a short boat ride from the city. Fjäderholmarna is one of the closest islands in the archipelago, only about 30 minutes from the city. The island is perfect for a day trip, offering scenic walking paths, quaint shops, and delicious seafood at local restaurants. It's a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and soak in the natural beauty of the area.
We had lunch at Fjäderholmarnas krog, a gorgeous little restaurant by the water.
Stockholm has, in my opinion, the best restaurant scene in the world. You can read all about the best restaurants in the my Stockholm restaurant guide.
When it comes to accommodation, I would highly recommend Bank Hotel. Located in a former bank building, the hotel exudes luxury and charm with its grand architecture and chic interiors.
They've got a great restaurant, a cool bar in what used to be the bank manager's office, and a rooftop bar with stunning views over the city. Situated in the heart of Stockholm, Bank Hotel is in a great location for exploring the city’s cultural landmarks, shopping streets, and vibrant dining scene.
