If you’re looking to uncover a hidden gem in Copenhagen, let me introduce you to Esmée. Tucked away in the heart of Denmark’s capital, this gorgeous restaurant blends modern elegance with a touch of Danish charm.
Copenhagen is a city that knows how to do cosy dining and design-forward spaces, and Esmée is a prime example of both. Tucked in the elegant district of Kongens Nytorv, this stylish brasserie delivers a blend of classic French flavours with a Nordic twist.
The Setting
Esmée’s location alone sets it apart—it’s just steps away from Nyhavn and the Royal Danish Theatre. The restaurant's interior is sleek yet inviting, with polished wood, warm lighting, and chic green accents that bring a touch of nature indoors. The outdoor terrace is perfect for people-watching, especially in the summer, when the city's buzz is at its peak.
With our two cheeky monkeys in tow, we headed off to Esmée one sunny evening in Copenhagen.
The Menu
The menu is where Esmée truly shines. It's a thoughtful curation of dishes that feel indulgent but not overwhelming. I started the evening with a perfectly crafted Martini, the kind that sets the tone for an indulgent evening. We then ordered a selection of small dishes to share, each beautifully presented and packed with flavour. The standout was the garlic bread, the most delicious, soft bread, stuffed with the perfect amount of delicious garlic and butter.
For the main course, we shared the roast chicken served with chanterelles - a dish that felt both hearty and refined. On the side, the indulgent truffle mac and cheese stole the show. Creamy, decadent, and full of earthy truffle notes, it’s the kind of comfort food you dream about long after the meal ends.
Service
The service at Esmée was attentive yet unobtrusive. Staff members were knowledgeable about the menu and happy to make wine pairings or explain ingredients, which I always appreciate.
Final Thoughts
Esmée is an excellent spot whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner, a chic lunch with friends, or just a beautiful space to enjoy good food while exploring Copenhagen. It’s on the pricier side, but you’re paying for quality and an experience that feels quintessentially Copenhagen.
Pro Tip: Book a table in advance, especially if you want to sit outside during the warmer months.
Esmée is now firmly on my list of must-visits in Copenhagen—whether it’s your first time in the city or your tenth.
