Stockholm's restaurant scene is a vibrant mix of innovation and tradition, offering something for every palate. From Michelin-starred dining rooms to cozy neighborhood bistros, the city is brimming with culinary talent and diverse flavors. Whether you're in the mood for contemporary Scandinavian cuisine, international dishes, or classic Swedish fare, Stockholm's restaurants deliver a dining experience that reflects the city's dynamic spirit. In this post, we'll explore some of the best places to eat in Stockholm, showcasing the variety and quality that make this city a true food lover's paradise.
One of my very favourite restaurants is a classic; Grodan Grev Ture. Opened in 1985, but with roots as far back as the late 1800s, Grodan is a classic European brasserie-style cuisine with a great atmosphere. The restaurant's elegant yet relaxed setting, with its high ceilings, chandeliers, and vintage decor, creates the perfect backdrop for enjoying dishes like perfectly cooked steaks, fresh seafood, and traditional Swedish fare.
They have a heated outdoor terrace as well as a more formal dining room.
Next on the list is Brasserie Astoria. Located in a beautifully renovated old cinema, this place has a stylish, vintage vibe that immediately draws you in. The menu is full of French-inspired classics, from delicious oysters and steak frites to perfectly cooked fish dishes. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxed, and the restaurant boasts a grand, Art Deco-inspired interior with high ceilings, plush seating, and elegant marble accents.
I can highly recommend the Toast Astoria, which is a twist on a classic Toast Skagen (an absolutely unmissable dish if you're visiting Sweden).
Another great French inspired restaurant is Brasserie Godot.
This place has got a great atmosphere and amazing French-Scandinavian food.
Gondolen is the restaurant where we got engaged. They closed down a few years ago and only reopened in 2024, which is when we visited for the second time, this time with two kids in tow. The food is still incredible and the service is on point - highly recommended. You also get a great view over Stockholm.
And lastly, one of my absolute favourites in Stockholm: Operabaren, which is located right next to the Michelin-starred Operakällaren. This atmospheric restaurant first opened in 1905, and the interior dates back to that time. With its dark wood paneling, vintage mirrors, and grand chandeliers, the restaurant offers a cozy yet sophisticated dining experience. It serves traditional Swedish dishes like gravlax, herring, and meatballs in a setting that captures the essence of Stockholm's rich cultural heritage.
